Menopause is a natural process that every woman has to face when she gets to the age of between 45 and 55. During this period, menstruation ceases and the female reproductive cycle comes to an end. The menopausal stage begins when a woman has her last menstrual period. It can be defined by twelve consecutive menses free months. At this stage, ovaries no longer produce eggs as hormone production stops.

Common symptoms of menopause are night sweats, hot flashes, itching, burning and vaginal dryness. But libido is usually maintained and may actually increase when fear of pregnancy is no longer a concern. Some women find menopause as a freedom because menopause means no more menstrual periods and no more worries about getting pregnant.

Most women enter the menopausal stage when they are about 50 years old. But it can happen any time between the age of 45 and 55. Menstrual period may be irregular for a year or two before they actually stop. Woman going through the menopause often have hot flushes. They may become irritable or depressed.

Sexual maturity lasts longer in some woman than in others. In 40% of woman it ceases between 45 to 50 years of age; in about 25% between 40 to 45 years or more commonly before 40. It ceases earlier in woman who have not borne children than in those who have a late child birth which occurs after forty years of age, postpones the menopause. The influence of climate and race also affect it.

The effects of menopause vary from woman to woman. In some women, metabolism decreases as a result there is increased development of fat all over the body. There are palpitations, vertigo, dizziness, roaring in the ears and blackness before the eyes; all the signs faintness.

Some women find the menopause hard to deal with because of the way it affects their bodies and feeling while some women are pleased to reach menopause because it means no more menstrual periods and no more worries about getting pregnant.
