Weather stations were once large, ugly, stationary devices. That has changed dramatically. Today, there are a variety of small weather stations available for different purposes in the home. Almost all of them are able to take advantage of wireless technology and use remote sensors to gather information.

A remote weather sensor is a small device that is usually mounted or set down in an area where it can transmit collected weather data to a central unit. What that data is depends on the sensor, of course.

The remote sensors come in all forms for all functions. The highest quality ones usually only broadcast a single type of weather data. For example, there could be separate remote sensors for wind speed and direction, humidity, rainfall amount, and temperature. All four of these sensors transmit information (most often by a low-strength radio signal) back to a central unit that neatly displays the numbers all at once.

There are also units that will allow remote sensors to be placed in completely different areas, and then each reading can be cycled through on the central unit, providing data on different areas at the same time. This is especially useful for people with large homes or greenhouses that want to track the temperatures or humidity in separate areas.

Whether they are hobbyists, scientists, or gardeners, consumers have taken a strong liking to remote weather sensors. They have become a mainstay in holiday gift catalogs. The price continues to come down each year on these units, allowing for higher quality sensors with more features to make their way into the market.
